Percussion

The Conservatory's Percussion Department features a world-class faculty, both of whom are members of the San Francisco Symphony. A BM in classical percussion, MM in classical percussion, MM in timpani and professional studies diploma in classical percussion are offered within a small and tight-knit department. The program is characterized by extensive performance opportunities, state-of-the art facilities and equipment and a close connection to the outside performing scene.

PERCUSSION DEPARTMENT: AT A GLANCE
  · 2 faculty: Professor Jack Van Geem, principal percussionist and
    assistant timpanist with the San Francisco Symphony and
    Professor David Herbert, the Symphony's principal timpanist
  · Small studio: 7-8 students
  · Degrees offered are: BM in classical percussion, MM in classical
    percussion, MM in timpani and a professional studies diploma
    in classical percussion
  · 7-8 Conservatory Orchestra performances per year
  · 2+ Percussion Ensemble performances per year
  · New Music opportunities with the New Music Ensemble and
    student composers' recitals
  · Graduate timpanists are expected to take a leadership role as
    timpanist in Conservatory Ensembles while taking lessons with
    Dave Herbert and occasional lessons with Jack Van Geem
  · Opportunities to play premieres of percussion works
  · Access to Conservatory's equipment for outside gigs
  · Opportunities to attend occasional San Francisco Symphony
    rehearsals
